The Campbell farm staff recently attended the Summer Hunger Summit at the Yakima Valley College Conference Center. The event brought together seven groups from different parts of the valley to learn about the feeding programs in the area and the best practices for serving their communities.

The day was filled with engaging conversations where the groups shared their experiences. They discussed kitchen management, outside resources, food donations, the real needs in their respective areas, what works, what needs improvement, serving sites, and delivery. By the end of the event, groups were left with a better understanding of what was happening in their communities and a better idea of what they hoped to create throughout their programs.

The Summer feeding program feeds anywhere from 375 to 500 people during the summer months at the Campbell Farm. Those who live on the Yakama reservation, especially our youth, depend on school meals for weekly nourishment. When school is out, most families struggle to feed themselves. TCF helps by serving meals Monday through Thursday for breakfast and lunch. Each meal represents a home meal filled with love and each essential food group. We serve two sites for breakfast and three for lunch, distributing any leftovers to our unhoused relatives in the area.

The Yakama Housing Authority partnered with us to offer financial literacy classes. They are led by our very own and past farm kid, Jamisha Sims, the literacy advisor for the YNHA, who has worked for the farm for over seven years and is now running literacy classes through the tribe. They are free and open to anyone, regardless of prior knowledge or experience. Whether you're an adult looking to improve your financial situation or a youth just starting your financial journey, these classes are the perfect opportunity to develop healthy money habits and take control of your finances.

Classes are held every Wednesday from noon to 1:30 PM for adults and every Thursday from 3 to 5 PM for youth. Join us at The Campbell Farm and discover how to manage your finances confidently and efficiently. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Jamisha Sims. Please refer to the flier.

UW STEAM

We are halfway through the year of our University of Washington program. Our 6th Graders have been diving deep into their mission of assessing if life on the moon is possible. Through challenges the students have learned to overcome obstacles by first learning how we travel to the moon, how close we are to being able to survive in that atmosphere. Students have explored in depth through experimentation, and they have learned that there are many similarities between the Earth and Moon but there are also a lot of differences. From learning about the surface area to building and launching their own rockets students have learned to overcome obstacles and work as a team. Recently the students took their second trip to The University of Washington campus in Seattle where they got to visit the Robotics lab and connect with the materials hands on. Afterwards they were able to program their own robots to complete mini missions. It was day to remember, and we are excited to invite the UW students out to Campbell Farm later this month for alternative spring break.
